Night Sitters remain awake at night to safeguard the young people living with Positive Care who might pose a risk to themselves or who might be at risk from others’ actions during the night.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- a) Young People
To stay awake and alert during the assigned hours in the house to which you are assigned.
Following the guidelines put in place for the individual young people in the house, to unobtrusively check on the young person’s safety at the regular intervals set down in the young person’s plan.
Observe the surroundings of the house and the interior of the house for unusual signs that might indicate the safety of the staff or young people may be compromised.
Follow guidance from the manager and follow the directions of the young people’s plans to do all that you can to discourage interaction with the young people at night and to encourage the young people to sleep at night.
- b) Staff
Receive updates on the plans for the young people and your instructions for the night from the day staff when you come to begin your shift.
If a young person is found to be distressed, at risk in any way, or refusing to stay in their room alert a sleeping staff member immediately, and follow any direction provided by the staff member
- c) Recording and Reporting
Record the night’s work using the information technology provided to you.
Report on the night to the day staff before you leave the house at the end of your shift.
- d) Whistle Blowing, Confidentiality, Company Welfare:
In line with our duty of care both to young people and to staff, bring to the attention of a Director any matter which may pose a risk to the safety or well being of a child, staff member or the company, according to our whistle blowing policy.
At all times maintain confidentiality in regard to the children in our care, staffing matters, financial matters, procedural matters and any other matters internal to the company.
Take responsibility at all times for the wellbeing of the Company, putting it before personal, financial or other gain.
- e) Any Other Duties:
Any other duties, within the competence of the post holder, that may be required, reasonably, from time to time. You may for example be asked to complete basic housekeeping or administrative tasks during the course of the night between checks on the young people and the physical surroundings.
- Hold at least a Level 7 qualification in social care .
- Be able to work to defined procedures
- Have a non judgmental understanding of the challenging behaviour that young people might display
- Full clean Garda vetting for Ireland and police clearance for any other country in which the post-holder has been resident for more than 6 months.
- Be able to risk assess situations and act in response to your assessment using your own initiative to formulate your response.
- Experience in working with young people with challenging behaviour
- Experience of working night shifts.
- Knowledge and experience of working within Irish Residential Care Standards
- Certificate in First Aid
- Completion of Children First training.
- Certificate of competence in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention
- Knowledge of Fire Safety practices
